Do it - you're worth it.

38. Best Vintage Clothing Store
1) Ragpickers Antifashion Emporium
216 McDermot Ave., 942-7992
This Exchange District haunt is more than a vintage clothing store - it's an institution. Featuring Winnipeg's largest selection of authentic vintage wear, Ragpickers Antifashion Emporium is the place to find all sorts of cool pieces from eras gone by. From '40s cocktail dresses to '70s ponchos to '80s acid-washed anything - you name it, Rags will probably have it. Bonus cool points: Not only does buying recycled and vintage clothing spice up your closet, it's also an environmentally conscious choice that prevents cool finds from ending up in the landfill. Only want to adopt the flapper/hippie/Madonna look temporarily? Ragpickers' famed costume rental section has got you covered.

970 Sargent Ave., 237-4977

41. Coolest New Clothing Store
1) American Apparel
108 Osborne St., 284-9273
Yes, the Collective Cabaret closed down to make room for American Apparel - but hey, at least a Wal-Mart didn't move in there. Besides offering cool, well-constructed clothing, American Apparel is different from a lot of big chains when it comes to its labour practices. Rather than contracting out its production work to sweatshops in developing countries, all AA clothing is manufactured at the company's Los Angeles factory, where garment workers are paid above-average wages, and offered affordable health insurance, subsidized transit and ESL lessons - all things that contribute to American Apparel's cool factor.
2) Local Shop Awesome
106 Osborne St., 474-1661

46. Best Cycle Shop
1) Gord's Ski & Bike
2 Donald St., 284-2952; 1765 Kenaston Blvd., 269-2952
I had the seat stolen from my bicycle once. It pissed me off. Then I took the bike to Gord's. Not only did they have the right size, it seemed they had every size and type of bike seat imaginable. Wheels and rims and handlebars and brakes, too. They'll even sell you (and your kids) a whole bike if you want one. But all I needed was a seat. And I got it with no problems at all.

47. Best Tattoo/Piercing Shop
1) Kapala Tattoo
304 St. Anne's Rd., 255-8897
Stop the presses! After seven consecutive years of dominance in this category, Soul Survivors has been bounced from its perennial number-one spot by Kapala. What gives? Well, Kapala does have an awesome, newly renovated shop, a clean, relaxed atmosphere and quite possibly the hottest receptionists in town. Oh yeah - it's also home to five talented artists with the skills to give you that wicked custom ink-job you've always wanted. Tattoos are cool - and so is Kapala.
2) Soul Survivors

b-729 Corydon Ave., 478-3513

48. Best Fetish/Sex Shop
1) Discreet Boutique
340 Donald St., 947-1307
Get out your whips and shine up those handcuffs, you kinky people. Once again you've voted Discreet Boutique the No. 1 sex shop in the city. Whether you're buying the solid aluminum, 12-inch 'Steely Dan' or just need some lube, Discreet Boutique can hook you up. The shop has everything your horny little heart desires, and the friendly staff will help you find what you need, judgement-free.

49. Best Independent Video Store
1) Movie Village
57 Osborne St., 477-5566
Stoned teenager: "Uh, yeah, do you, like, have that movie, you know? The one where David Bowie's junk is flopping around a lot?"
Friendly Movie Village staff: "Yeah, you want Labyrinth, and it's in the cult movies section."
Seriously, if you're a movie fan in this city, there's literally nowhere else to go. From the biggest Hollywood hits to the most obscure indie movie no one else has ever heard of, you'll find it here.
2) Pick-A-Flick
Several Winnipeg locations
3) Tie: Viewer's Choice/Blockbuster
Several Winnipeg locations

50. Best Indie CD store
1) Into the Music
B-245 McDermot Ave., 287-8279
Music geeks know that the secret to a good used record store is not just the volume of new discs and LPs it hauls in every week, but also the quality of the new arrivals. Into the Music's regulars know that the store's "new this week' bins are almost always going to reveal a 'must-have' treasure. The funky, newly expanded Exchange District store also boasts knowledgeable staff who are always playing cool tunes on the in-house stereo.
2) Music Trader
97 Osborne St., 475-0077
3) War on Music
333 Garry St., 219-2158

51. Best Used Bookstore
1) Red River Book Shop
92 Arthur St., 943-9788
If you're at all claustrophobic, stay away from Red River Book Shop. The place is jam-packed with all the books, comic books, and used porn you could ever need. In this unique store you can sift through stacks of paperbacks that are as tall as you are, and spend hours looking for that one gem that you've always wanted to own. They also have VHS tapes, DVDs, videogames, and anything else your heart desires. Just be careful not to let that stack of books fall on you.
2) Aqua Books
274 Garry St., 943-7555
3) Burton Lysecki Books
527 Osborne St., 284-4546

52. Best Local Bookstore
1) McNally Robinson Booksellers
120 Grant Ave., 475-0483; 1485 Portage Ave.,943-8376
Once again, Uptown readers have picked McNally Robinson as the number one local bookstore in town - and we can't say we blame them. With a selection that's second to none, comfy chairs that you can sit and read in all day without getting dirty looks, and even free book readings by authors, this is the place to be. Be sure to check out the new location at Polo Park. It's huge. A friend wandered in looking for a book on Greek mythology and hasn't been seen since.
2) Chapters
Several Winnipeg locations
3) Aqua Books
274 Garry St., 943-7555

53. Best Music Equipment Store
1) Long & McQuade
Stafford and Pembina, 284-8992
If you're in a band - and it's highly likely that you are, what with Winnipeg's eight months of winter and all - then you need gear. Long & McQuade has everything a musician could possibly want: from cool instruments and the hottest new audio equipment to mundane necessities such as mics, guitar stings and drum sticks. And, since many of its products are available for rent, you don't have to panic if your bass player quits the night before the big gig, or you realize en route to the venue that you smashed your guitar during your last show and forgot to replace it.
2) Mother's Music
661 Wall St., 783-6045
3) Second Encore Music Store
1349 Portage Ave., 788-0967

54. Best Natural Food Store
1) Organza Natural & Organic Market
230 Osborne St. at Confusion Corner, 453-6266
An emerging eco-consciousness has kick-started a renewed interest in all things organic, and for Winnipeggers who are trying to cut down on pesticides, growth hormones, and processed food made from weird ingredients with unpronounceable names, Organza is the place to go. Its 7,000 square foot store has a wide variety of organic and natural food (including fresh, locally sourced produce and meat), as well as phosphate-free cleaning supplies and a diverse health and beauty section. You are what you eat, after all.
2) Vita Health
Several Winnipeg locations
3) Organic Planet
877 Westminster Ave., 772-8771

55. Best Place to Rescue Cool Junk
1) Value Village
Several Winnipeg locations
Don't you love those stores where you can go in looking for a T-shirt and walk out with a black velvet painting of Elvis? That's the beauty of Value Village. With new stuff arriving all the time, you never know what you're gonna find. It's not just used clothing. Besides the classic rock tees, you can find a Commodore 64, an old organ, or maybe one of those cool rotary telephones. Trust us - shopping at VV can become an addiction.
2) Garbage Bin/Dump/Back Lane
3) Antiques and Funk
474 Main St., 943-4782

56. Best Tailor
1) Tony's Custom Tailor
306 St. Anne's Rd., 255-7572
Pop the buttons on your favourite shirt? Need an immediate hem-job on those new pants for the job interview tomorrow? Head on down past the forks of St. Anne's and St. Mary's to Tony's, where they'll take care of all your routine adjustments and emergency repairs. It's conveniently located near Kapala Tattoo, as well, so you can have your leather jacket repaired and get your latest skin adornment coloured at the same time.
2) Tip Top
Several Winnipeg locations
3) The Bay
Several Winnipeg locations

57. Best Hat and Bag Shop
1) The Haberdashery
835 Corydon Ave., 256-3758
Selected with care and worn with just the right amount of aplomb, a hat is a fashion accessory that can win you admirers and help you stand out from the crowd (just look at what that fedora did for Joey Jeremiah.). With a tricked-out facade that's as cool as the stuff inside, this hip Corydon boutique caters to trendsetting guys and gals with its ever-changing assortment of stylin' accessories such as hats, bags, belts and shoes. The only challenge is deciding which ones to take home with you.
2) Aldo Shoes Inc.
St. Vital Shopping Centre, 255-2968; Polo Park Shopping Centre, 774-2868
3) Boes Ltd.
Several Winnipeg locations

58. Best Head Shop
1) Kustom Kulture
470 River Ave., 453-7473
Smoke 'em if you got 'em. Our friends at Kustom Kulture are the people to see if you're looking for something to put your 'alternative to tobacco' in. All the pretty, shiny glass things might distract you for a while, but if you need a one-hitter or a triple-chamber vaporizer, you've come to the right place. They have lots of cool books and clothes, too.
2) Hemp Haven
496 Larsen Ave., 654-3933
3) City Haul
823 Corydon Ave., 475-6142

59. Best Neighbourhood to Live In
1) Osborne Village
Bars, cool clothing stores and restaurants, all within the same block. What more could you ask for? How about a kick-ass music store, a head shop and enough tattoo parlours to keep any sane person happy? The Village has that, too. But it's not the stores that make up a neighbourhood, it's the people. The Village is a haven for folks of all stripes. Neo-hippies, hipsters, street punks - all the basic demographics are covered here. Wander down on any night and you'll find something going on.
2) Wolseley
3) St. Vital

60. Best Free Event
1) Fringe Fest Free Stage
For 12 glorious days, Winnipeg's annual summer theatre festival provides free entertainment for anyone who happens to wander into Old Market Square. It's hard to say what's more enjoyable to watch: the rotating roster of musicians, magicians and comedians onstage, or the assortment of freaks and weirdos in the audience. Either way, a few hours spent parked on the grass at the Fringe's free stage is a guaranteed good time - no money required.
2) Jazz Fest Free Stage
3) Canada Day at the Forks/in Osborne Village

61. Best Beach
1) Grand Beach
Well, they didn't exactly push the envelope with the naming of this one, but really, it fits. The sand, the water, the hot bodies - it is indeed a grand beach to spend a sunny day at. Sun worshippers unite at this spot to catch some fantastic rays and cool off in the calm blue waters of Lake Winnipeg. Even if you don't dig the surf and the sand, there's a ton to do. Trails to explore, mini-golf, and they even have a bar right next to the beach. If you can't find something fun to do here, then you're not trying very hard.
2) Winnipeg Beach
3) Bird's Hill Park

62. Best Sports Complex
1) MTS Centre
300 Portage Ave., 987-7825
Nice sightlines. Comfortable seats. Cup holders. No troughs in the men's washrooms. It's no wonder that MTS Centre is considered one of the nicest new hockey rinks in the country. The Moose aren't bad, either, as the AHL is probably the second-best hockey league on the planet. But we all know we want the best, right?
2) Highlander Sports Centre
1871 Ellice Ave., 784-8888
3) Canwest Park
1 Portage Ave. E., 982-2273

63. Best Place to Sit and Read
1) Assiniboine Park
With lots of benches and vast expanses of sun-drenched fields, it's no wonder that Assiniboine Park is a bibliophile's dream. All you need is a blanket to stretch out on, a few snacks to get you through the afternoon and, of course, a good book - like maybe the one that's been sitting on your bedside table for months.
2) The Forks
3) At home/In the backyard

64. Best Toboggan Hill
1) Garbage Hill
Only in Winnipeg would the highest peak around be a hill built on top of a rotting pile of garbage. Grab your sled - or whatever you can find - and head to the top of the hill. After carefully surveying all of the possible ways down, seize the day and take the craziest one you can find. You know what we're talking about - straight downhill for about 50 feet before that big jump over the ditch at the end. Breaking your landing with your face is optional.
2) Omand's Creek
3) The Floodway

65. Best Golf Course
1) Kildonan Park
Drive down North Main Street at 6 a.m. on a Saturday and you'll see the heartiest of hackers already on the 6th hole at Kildonan Park. The undisputed highlight of this short, but tricky, muni is the 10th hole - a 137-yard par 3 over (or, in some cases, under) a railway bridge. The city is still considering adding a windmill, a drawbridge and a clown's mouth.
2) Niakwa Country Club
3) St. Charles Country Club

66. Coolest Washroom
1) Moxie's Downtown
Conveniently located in the Portage Avenue facade of MTS Centre, Moxie's downtown location has a natural crowd on game days. It also rocks pretty hard on weekends but, people aside, two of the other best things about this restaurant are its high-end restrooms. We can only speak for the men's side of things here, but there's nothing finer than a washroom TV that can be viewed even when one is sitting down. Wouldn't want to miss a goal now, would you?
2) Shoppers Drug Mart on Sherbrook
3) Earl's Downtown

67. Best Graffiti
1) Graffiti Gallery
109 Higgins Ave., 667-9960
Apparently, Winnipeggers aren't big fans of illegal graffiti, since this is the second year in a row that Graffiti Art Programming Inc. - aka the Graffiti Gallery - has won in this category. Then again, maybe all of you who voted it into first place are onto something, since the artwork coming out of this not-for-profit community youth art centre is consistently top-notch - proof that its artists have some serious skills with the spray paint.
2) CN Trains
3) Exchange District/Mondragon

68. Best Place to Go on a Date
1) The Forks
Whether it's a walk through the market or a skate along the river, The Forks is the 'Peg's ultimate date spot, be it 30 above or 30 below. With plenty of restaurants, shops, buskers and pretty places to sit and get to know each other, there's no shortage of things to do and see at The Forks - which is a good thing, especially if your dates usually include awkward silences and nervous laughter.
2) A park
3) Movies

69. Best Place to Get Naked
At Home
No wonder the Winnipeg episodes of Kink were so boring. It seems that we like to fly our kinky flags in the comfort of our own homes. No public washrooms or parks on this list - although several brave souls did say they like to get naked at Portage and Main. Is this just a joke, or part of some secret society that we don't know about?
2) At The Beach
3) Portage and Main

70. Best Place to Forget You're in Winnipeg
1) The Forks
While The Forks is probably the most recognizably 'Winnipeg' place to a tourist, us Peg people see it a little differently. With its impressive selection of international cuisine, outdoor tai chi classes, dragon-boat races, reggae festivals and artisans from all over the map selling their wares, spending a day at The Forks is sort of like going on a mini backpacking tour all over the world.
2) The Exchange
3) Assiniboine Forest

71. Winnipeg's Best Kept Secret
1) Kapala Tattoo
304 St. Anne's Rd., 255-8897
Kapala may have been Winnipeg's best kept secret, but now that it's been crowned the best tattoo shop in town, it won't stay that way for long. You'd better book your appointment quick.
2) Tie: Fringe Fest/Trappist Monastery
3) Assiniboine Park/Assiniboine Forrest

72. Best Place of Worship
1) Calvary Temple
400 Hargrave St., 943-4551
We at Uptown prefer to worship at the altar of rock 'n' roll, but we understand that some of our readers don't share our inclinations. For those of you who are a little more traditional, Calvary Temple would be happy to have you. Welcoming, friendly and highly community-based, this large, downtown Christian temple offers a service or program for everyone - from a myriad of pre-school and youth Sunday school choices to its New Immigrant Help Network.
2) Springs Church
595 Lagimodiere Blvd., 233-7003
3) Tie: Westminster United/Holy Rosary
Maryland and Westminster, 784-1331 / 510 River Ave., 284-5140

73. Best Piece of Public Art
Bears on Broadway
Boy, people really love those bears. Seriously, it's been, like, two years since they first appeared on Broadway, and people still voted for these things in droves. Could it have something to do with our guilt about global warming and its devastating effects on polar bears' habitat? Or do people just really dig cute statues of bears dressed up as construction workers? Either way, Bears on Broadway is your favourite piece of public art. Still.
2) Leo Mol Sculpture Garden
3) The Golden Boy

74. Favourite Local Musician
1) Joanne Rodriguez
She might be small in stature, but Joanne Rodriguez packs a huge stage presence. Whether she's rocking out with American Flamewhip or tearing it up with The Angry Dragons, J-Rod is a superhero of a frontwoman with a crazy-ass set of pipes. Offstage, she's the cool, beer-drinking rock chick that girls want to be and guys want to date - and she's really nice, to boot. There's a good reason why J-Rod is Winnipeg's favourite musician - she's also Winnipeg's coolest.
2) Greg MacPherson
3) John K. Samson

75. Favourite Local Actor
1) Adam Beach
We've said it before, but we'll say it again - we may just have to retire this category. Adam Beach usually claims this title - but he seems to be more deserving of it every year. In 2006, he portrayed U.S. marine Ira Hayes in Clint Eastwood's Academy Award-nominated Flags of Our Fathers - a role he received rave reviews for. In 2007, he joined the cast of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for a season, playing detective Chester Lake. Based on his impressive track record, it's a safe bet that the Saulteaux First Nation actor will win again next year.
2) Adam Jennings
3) Stephen McIntyre

76. Favourite Local Actress
1) Shannon Jacques
She doesn't have a ton of acting credits under her belt yet but, clearly, Shannon Jacques - it's pronounced "Jakes" - already has quite the fan club. After graduating with an honours degree in theatre from the U of W in 2004, Jacques has been honing her craft as a film actress, scoring several small parts including a role in 2003's Behind the Camera: the unauthorized story of Three's Company (she played a make-up artist). You'll also get to see her playing a secretary in the made-for-TV movie, Elijah, which premieres on Sunday, May 25 at 7 p.m. on CTV.
2) Joanne Rodriguez
3) Anna Paquin

77. Favourite Local Visual Artist
1) Wanda Koop
Koop is a perennial winner of this award - and she should be. In her career, Koop has become one of the best-known visual artists Winnipeg has produced. Her works are vibrant and challenging, her list of honours is too long to include here and, perhaps most important, she continues to fight for recognition of visual art as a worthwhile and healthy cultural activity, a struggle best encapsulated by the fact she founded Art City, a popular and much-lauded West Broadway art program that pairs inner-city kids with young, up-and-coming contemporary artists.
2) Rich Handrod
3) Shauna Dempsey

78. Hottest Man
1) Adam Jennings
Who is this dark, mysterious stranger? We tried to Facebook him but his profile is blocked. All we can see is that he's a handsome dude, and is quite possibly the most popular person in the city as well. We're working under the assumption that he got all of his friends to vote for him.
2) Ace Burpee
3) Kaine Handford

79. Hottest Woman
1) Joanne Kelly
She's smart, she's funny, she's attractive and she always seems to be on whenever we tune in to Shaw TV. She's Joanne Kelly. 'Nuff said.
2) Lynne Smiklesw
3) Shannon Jacques

80. Favourite Local DJ
1) DJ Hunnicutt
DJ Hunnicutt has been getting Winnipeggers to cut a rug for over 15 years. In addition to being of of the city's foremost party starters, Hunnicutt also co-founded local hip hop imprint Peanuts and Corn Records and has hosted UMFM's Born in the Break since 1998. Spinning everything from rock and hip hop to funk and disco, Hunnicutt, along with partner in crime DJ Co-op, has been responsible for some of the most successful dance parties in the 'Peg.
2) DJ Co-op
3) DJ Fin-S

81. Favourite Local Photographer
1) Jesse Robinson
Upon receiving the final vote tallies for Best of Winnipeg, our first response was 'Who's Jesse Robinson?' A couple of weeks later, we are still none the wiser. There are 25 J Robinsons in the Winnipeg phone book, 16 J Robinsons in Canada411, several more on Facebook and a Google search for Jesse Robinson + photography + Winnipeg turns up nada. So, if you're out there, Jesse Robinson, many people think you do good work. You oughta be more visible.
2) Janzen Photography
3) Ian McCausland

82. Favourite Local Radio Personality
1) Ace Burpee (Hot 103)
For someone who's on the radio, you sure see a lot of Ace Burpee's face out there. We're just saying is all. But the Hot-103 morning show host does have the voice to back up all of those billboards. He entertains thousands on their drive to work in the morning, and he does lots of charity gigs, too, so he's good in our books.
2) Hal Anderson (Power 97)
3) Amie Lesyk (CJOB 68)

83. Favourite Radio Station
1) Hot 103
This was a close one, but the results are in - Hot 103 is the most popular radio station in the city. Led by everyone's favourite radio personality, Ace Burpee, the station that plays a non-stop mix of crowd-pleasing Top 40 tunes knocked out last year's favourite, Power 97, heartily. Kudos must go to Kick FM and Freq 107 for beating out the big boys, too, as it's always nice to see smaller stations getting some attention.
2) 92.9 Kick Fm
3) Freq 107 Fm

84. Favourite Local Journalist
1) Tom Brodbeck (Winnipeg Sun)
Love him or hate him, Brodbeck loves to upset the status quo at City Hall and the Manitoba Legislature, his two favourite political targets in his no-nonsense columns and blogs.
2) Bartley Kives (Winnipeg Free Press)
3) Joanne Kelly (Shaw TV)

85. Best Local TV Station
1) CTV
Why do Winnipeggers love CTV? For starters, it's home to none other than Sylvia Kuzyk - the grande dame of local broadcasting and a woman who, along with her collection of colourful berets, has been a fixture on the CTV scene (and TV screens everywhere) for over 30 years. Of course, there's also the fact that CTV's lineup includes nine of the Top 10 rated shows in the market - programs such as Grey's Anatomy, Lost, Desperate Housewives, and American Idol. And did we mention that Sylvia Kuzyk works there?
2) Global
3) CBC

86. Favourite TV Sportscast
1) TSN
OK, we were really after the best local sportscast in this category, but there's no denying the power of Sportscentre. When there's not a game on, all the highlights arrive on the hour, every hour - and, in the midst of hockey season, game stories are repeated every half-hour, making TSN a must-watch for serious fans.
2) Global
3) Tie: CBC/CTV

87. Favourite Local Athlete
1) Cindy Klassen
Although her sister was in a serious car accident that cut her '07-'08 competitive season short, 2006 Olympic hero Cindy Klassen remains the sporting darling of Uptown readers largely because she is perhaps the most successful Olympic athlete Winnipeg has ever produced. And those MTS TV ads don't hurt, either.
2) Milt Stegall
3) Jonathan Toews

88. Best Local Philanthropist
1) The Aspers
The name Asper has become practically synonymous with charitable giving - probably because the family behind the home-grown media empire that is Canwest Global Communications has given away more money than many of us will make in a lifetime. The Aspers' generous donations have helped establish local educational initiatives, support the city's thriving arts community, and grow our capacity for cutting-edge medical research. Most recently, they've provided the financial foundation for the soon-to-be-built Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
2) The Richardsons
3) Kelly Hughes

89. Most Outrageous Winnipegger
1) Dancin' Gabe
He's as Winnipeg as complaining about the weather, and his dance moves are as unpredictable. This fun-loving sports fan is a local icon - he's been getting people up and dancing at sporting events for as long as we can remember. How many Winnipeggers grew up watching him cheer on the Jets, or the Moose? He's also a human encyclopedia when it comes to sports trivia. Seriously. Ask him anything and he'll have the answer.
2) Hal Anderson
3) Sam Katz

90. Favourite Local Politician
1) Gary Doer
Gary Doer is truly a remarkable politician. He was re-elected last summer as our premier - for the third consecutive time. That was a pretty big deal, but this year's win in Uptown is an equally big coup. That's because he bested Sam Katz by a single vote. Yes, it was a close one: A recount was called, and there was a heated debate about what a vote for "anyone but Sam Katz" counted as. Things almost ended in fisticuffs but, in the end, Doer came out on top.

3) Glen Murray
