New record, new sound 'Peg rockers Jet Set Satellite get heavy on new album, End of an EraDon Beat "I think this album is the full realization of the sound that we always intended," says Jet Set Satellite vocalist/songwriter Trevor Tuminski, sipping coffee, seated in the Downtown Bus Depot Sals. "It's a heavy, sexy rock sound. We're not doom metal. "Even when we were just two guys, we had a different sound in mind than what we were actually doing at the time. I always equivocate that to chasing echoes in my head," Tuminski - who is a regular review contributor to the Ontario-based, horror-themed Rue Morgue Magazine - states. "Two of my favorite bands are Killing Joke and Jesus Lizard, but I can't write like that." End of an Era, the new Jet Set Satellite album, is an unusually catchy local release. It's the third full-length from JSS - which has been a popular energetic rock group based in Winnipeg for the past 10 years. The band has followed up the recently released Ladykiller - the debut single and video from the album - with the 'just-released' single Black.Heart.Burn. Tuminski seems pleased when I mention that I hear heavy bubble-rock influences and hard-rock riffs not unlike those flaunted by the likes of Kiss and Soundgarden on the new album. "The whole ominous nature of the title of the album is because there's an apocalyptic theme throughout the record," Tuminski says, "which would explain the inclusion of Black Sabbath's Children of the Grave. I think the core of the album is the track Resurrexit. "Whereas the other albums were a collection of songs, this is the first album that we actually wrote as an album, and it's the first of the three that we produced wholly ourselves," Tuminski continues. "I think it's a heavier-focused record. Over the years we're getting older, and from playing shows we just started getting heavier. It's what the audience seems to respond to." U heavy-rock-responsive street beaters can go all gaga agog a go-go when Jet Set Satellite celebrate the release of End of An Era at Silverado's on Aug. 14 with special revved-up support from X engine X and Scott Hinkson. A week later, on Aug. 21, Jet Set hit it at the Molson Mega Keg at Coyote's with Econoline Crush. Check out jetsetsatellite.com for more info. "As we age and as our band ages, the music begins to collect barnacles - it gets tougher and harder," Tuminski says.
