Funk gets filthy Experimentalist Aaron Funk (aka Venetian Snares) unveils details about his forthcoming full-length album, FilthDon Beat "I think good music has got to kick the shit out of you unless you're listening to Burt Bacharach eating Valium and Doritos all the way on the floor to the point where you are so lethargic you slide off the sofa," says Winnipeg breakcore pioneer Aaron Funk (aka Venetian Snares) about his music, with direct reference to an upcoming Snares gig. After touring the U.S. for the past month or so, Snares is playing his first local show of 2009 at the Albert - a birthday bash for his friend and fellow noise maker Jaymez - on Jan. 30 with Fanny, Not Half, Jaymez and Slattern. "I've seen references to bands from all over the world being described as Winnipeg breakcore," says groundbreaking Winnipeg synth-breaker Al Conroy - who, as Not Half, has released about a dozen albums. He's currently finishing up the artwork for Volume 6 in his Noise series of full-length album recordings, which should be available at the show. You breakin' synth heads can check www.dtrashrecords.com for more info. Of Winnipeg breakcore, Conroy has this to say: "It's the crazier side of breakcore." The prolific and exciting digital destructo wizard works of Venetian Snares can be found on scores of releases, most notably on Planet Mu Records. The current Snares full-length is called Detrimentalist. It's relentlessly experimental, and easily as thought-provoking as any of his previous brain-busting work. His two future projects - a full-length album titled Filth and an EP called Horsey Noise - are ready to be released. "I'm going to play some of my Filth tracks at the Albert, and whatever else I feel like at the time," Snares shares. "Filth is really noisy. "It's an acid album in a new way. I love it. It has really great titles on it like Kimberly Clarke and Deep Dicking. I'm running my 303s through distortion boxes. It's filthiness to the nth degree." Check Venetian Snares at MySpace or Planet-Mu.com for more info about this. Also check out Snares' blog via MySpace for some hilarious self-penned press releases. "My label always asks me to write my own," Snares says. "They always write some real sterile stuff. I write real ridiculous things. I called the Detrimentalist my 333rd release." Snares starts reading excerpts from the blog so I'll share some of the more exciting tid bits with U. Words such as "ejacutronic" and "huge unfolding" are whizzed off with self-reference, and then there's the epic, "More and more snares between the snares from Snares," attributed to Aaron Sparkling Water Funk. Hey, if you're going to write this junk you might as well have tonz of fun. Funk says he's been jamming on another fun musical project off and on whenever he can on tour. "I did some recording in L.A. with John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers). It's cool. Whenever we get together we always record shit. "It's like free jazz. We don't do edits on it or anything. We do it all live. Our band is called Speed Dealer Moms," Snares laughs. "I just love making music, and it's actually nice doing music with other people," he says about SDM. "I do it on my own so much, it's different for me."
