BEST OF WINNIPEG 2009 The results are in! (Part 1)Uptown Staff Our annual Best of Winnipeg survey is a group effort. This year, things got rolling way back in December, when Uptown editor John Kendle passed around last year's list of 90 categories for Best of Winnipeg 2008. Some categories were dropped, some were added, some were renamed, but no one was hurt in the process. we think. Then, it was your turn. The final ballot was published in the paper and posted online and, for three months, any Winnipegger with a pen and some basic literacy skills - or access to a computer - had the opportunity to sound off about the people and places that make our city cool. In early May, Red River creative communications students Brenlee Coates and Vanessa Kunderman began tabulating the 800-plus ballots - because mindless grunt work is what interns and students get to do around here. Theirs was an extremely time-consuming and meticulous task, which is why we finally gave up listening to their whining and let them finish up over a weekend at home. For days they painstakingly sifted through stacks of barely legible handwritten entries, trying to decide if "'80s Night" was in reference to a particular club, or just in general. Occasionally, there were a few laughs in response to your, um, creative license, perhaps best demonstrated by the many, many votes for Red Lobster as Best Place to Take a Date. When the official count was finished, it was time for more busywork. All the top finishers we could find were contacted, congratulated and then photographed by Uptown's Nick Friesen, who was happy to take a break from his usual gigs as filmmaker, editor and website honcho, and actually get outside for once. Next, addresses and phone numbers were confirmed - but still we weren't finished. Rather than force Uptown staff writer Jen Zoratti to write 90 informative and insightful blurbs about your top picks (she was an intern, too, once, and wrote 80 of 'em for Best of Winnipeg 2006), the job was divvyed up almost equitably amongst staff and our erstwhile freelance writer/comedians, Mike Sherby, Jared Story and John Towns. (Kendle got away with doing very few. Not just because he's the boss. We were simply afraid to ask him. Every time we brought it up, he would mutter darkly about something called a Sou'wester.) The resultant exercise in writing short, concise and to-the-point paragraphs about winners in various categories proved a particularly vexing ordeal for Marlo Campbell, Uptown's other staff writer and a woman who has trouble writing less than 700 words on any given topic at the best of times. The finish line was near. Most spelling and grammatical errors were corrected (we hope), Marlo's blurbs were cut in half and our collective literary genius was handed over to Uptown art director Karl Thomsen for the final leg of the journey. Fresh from a relaxing two-week break in the U.K., Karl was put directly into the firing line upon his return when he was asked to lay out the biggest issue of the year in double-time. Using his Jedi-like mastery of the visual arts (and aided by soothing Buddhist chanting on his trusty iPod), Karl put everything together in a way that not only made sense but also looked good.
At last, our job is over. You now hold 2009's finished product in your hands (unless, of course, you're reading this online, in which case you might want to thank Mike Goreski, our elusive web master and former-rock-star-in-charge-of-all-things -cyber-related). We know the results of this year's Best of Winnipeg readers' poll will generate lively debate and possibly some anger, but hey, don't blame us - this is as much yours as ours.
Whether you agree or disagree, this survey reflects your opinions about the city we all call home. And this year there were a few surprises, too, especially in our Winnipeg People categories. Our winners for Hottest Man, Hottest Woman, Most Outrageous Winnipegger and Favourite Politician were people who, we assume, were being unsuspectingly pranked by their oh-so-loving friends. However, if any of them do want to contact us and get their 15 minutes of fame (or at least their pictures in Uptown), they are more than welcome to do so. Until next year's poll, thanks for taking the time to be a part of the experience.

Best Service 1) Earls Several Winnipeg locations While we have a sneaking suspicion that many of you may have voted for this one because of the servers' famous 'assets,' we're willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. One of the reasons Earls is such a successful chain must have something to do with the friendly, attentive service you're bound to receive - but the famed Earls Girls probably don't hurt, either.

Conveniently located downtown, VJ's has been serving up delicious bits of greasy goodness for years now. Rumour has it even Neil Young stops there when he's in town. The only way to beat that is to have the entire starting lineup of the 1992 Jets eating there at once. (Editor's note: The '92 Jets? Didn't they flame out against Vancouver in the first round?)
2) Daly Burger 619 Corydon Ave., 284-4944 3) George's Burgers & Subs Several Winnipeg Locations

11. Best Fine Dining 1) 529 Wellington 529 Wellington Cres., 487-8325 It should come as no surprise that 529 secured top honours in this category. Located within a beautifully restored 1912 mansion overlooking the Assiniboine River, this Wellington Crescent steakhouse boasts such fine cuts of meat that it doesn't even need a name, just a freakin' address. Seriously, everything from the cocktails and appetizers to the service here is top notch - or so we've been told. Our diets consist mostly of canned meat and Kraft Dinner.

14. Best Ice Cream/Gelato 1) Bridge Drive-In (BDI) 766 Jubilee Ave., 475-6850 A summer institution, the Bridge Drive-In literally has something for everyone. Sure, you can get something classic such as an ice-cream cone or a banana split, but why not try something different? BDI serves up ice cream for the adventurous. Not sure where to start? We like The Sleeping Beauty - a half-pineapple filled with ice cream, strawberries and cherries.
2) Nucci's 643 Corydon Ave., 475-8765 3) G.G. Gelati 705 Corydon Ave ., 453-5710
15. Best Food Vendor (Cart, Wagon, or Van) 1) Mini Donuts A mainstay of the Red River Ex and summer festivals for years now, the Mini Donuts stand reigns supreme in Winnipeg. These treats are sure to warm your heart and your stomach.
2) Goldie's 3) Smoke'n Bob's Hot Dogs
16. Best Patio 1) Tavern United Several Winnipeg Locations There's nothing better than sitting out in the sun on a warm summer's day with a cold beer, listening to AC/DC streaming out of the speakers, watching the world go by. With it's enormous beer selection, and generous helpings of wings (not to mention faux-British charm), Tavern is the place to go for those days when you just want to enjoy some libations in the sun. Especially the one on the rooftop of the CTV building, right next to MTS Centre.

17. Best Neighbourhood Pub 1) The Toad In The Hole Pub & Eatery 112 Osborne St., 284-7201 Sure, The Toad can be cramped, noisy and busy - but it's also your favourite pub. Beside being the best place to put down a pint this side of the U.K., it also happened to feature some of Winnipeg's finest local talent downstairs in The Cavern. There's lots of reasons we love The Toad - warts and all.
2) King's Head Pub 120 King St., 957-7710 3) Dylan O'Connors Irish Pub 2609 Portage Ave., 415-4012; 9-1875 Pembina Hwy., 275-1926
18. Best Beer Selection 1) The King's Head Pub & Eatery 120 King St. 957-7710 Row upon row of shining metal taps, just waiting to burst forth with flowing golden suds, that delicious liquid bread. The King's Head is less of a mortal pub than it is the Beer Valhalla. Bonus points for featuring the best selection of local beers in the city - be sure to try a Half Pints or Fort Garry while you're there. Now excuse us while we wipe the drool from our keyboards.
2) The Toad in The Hole Pub & Eatery 112 Osborne St., 284-7201 3) The Round Table Steak House & Pub 800 Pembina Hwy., 453-3631
19. Best Wine List 1) Noir Wine Bar & Eatery 470 River Ave. 477-6777 There's no better way to say, "Look at me - I'm cultured, sophisticated and I'm an adult, damnit!" than by perusing a wine list and picking that nice bottle of 2007 Sauvignon Blanc whilst sitting in a trendy Osborne Village wine bar. Add some DJs on the weekends and you've got one swank hangout. And if you're not sure which bottle of wine to pick, the staff will gladly help you - without snickering at you behind your back. Honest
2) 529 Wellington 529 Wellington Cres., 487-8325 3) Mise 842 Corydon Ave., 204-284-7916
20. Best Place to Drink Alone 1) The Toad in The Hole Pub & Eatery 112 Osborne St. 284-7201 Mad that your girlfriend just dumped you? Pissed off that Ted in sales keeps getting promoted over you? Then head down to The Toad, grab a pint and a corner to sit in and get to know yourself a little better. If solo boozing was good enough for Hemingway, it should be good enough for you.
2) King's Head Pub 120 King St., 957-7710 3) Cousin's Deli & Lounge 55 Sherbrook St,. 783-4695

22. Best Server 1) Maelanny Gray Despite our best efforts, we were unable to track down just where exactly Ms. Gray works. So we're left to imagine that, with this many people voting for her, it must be some sort of super-hip place that we're not nearly cool enough to know about. Congratulations to you Maelanny, wherever you are.
2) Erika Davis (no restaurant given) 3) Chelsea (The Toad in The Hole Pub & Eatery) 112 Osborne St., 284-7201
23. Best Bartender 1) Cliff Warwick (The Toad in The Hole Pub & Eatery) 112 Osborne St. 284-7201 Someone once said, "The hard part about being a bartender is figuring out who is drunk and who's just stupid." Being a bartender means putting up with a lot of abuse, but Cliff at The Toad puts up with it better than most bartenders and manages to keep the line moving, even during the busiest times of day.
2) Dave Giroux (The King's Head Pub & Eatery) 120 King St. ,957-7710 3) Tyler B (Canad-Inns Polo Park) 1405 St Matthews Ave., 775-8791

26. Best Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant 1) Mondragon 91 Albert St., 946-5241 Are you looking to stick it to the man and eat some great food? Then stop by this Exchange District mainstay. Mondragon's delicious vegan offerings are, in a word, amazing. It's probably not the best way to rate a vegan restaurant, but the food is so good you forget that there's no meat in it. And in addition to a yummy (and ethical) menu, Mondragon serves up plenty of food for thought in its bookstore.
2) Delicious 1467 Pembina Hwy., 477-1530 3) Eat! Bistro 274 Gary St., 949-1231
27. Best Dance Club 1) Blush Ultraclub 323 Portage Ave. 221-4583 Looking to lace up those red shoes and rock down to Electric Avenue? Then your best bet is Blush. It's not just a regular club - it's an Ultraclub. We're still not sure what that means exactly, but Blush is the classiest dance bar in the city, so kick back those heels and practice doing your best lawnmower or sprinkler. At 19,000 square feet, Blush boasts two floors, four bars, a massive dance floor and a patio that girls were dancing after Game 1 of the AHL final last week - which is a good thing, especially if your dance moves resemble those of one Elaine Benes.
2) HiFi Club 2-108 Osborne St., 415-1981 3) Alive In The District 140 Bannatyne Ave., 989-8080
28. Hottest Club Clientele 1) HiFi Club 2-108 Osborne St., 415-1981 Located above American Apparel in Osborne Village, the HiFi Club is where our city's beautiful people flock. 2) Alive In The District 140 Bannatyne Ave., 989-8080 3) Blush Ultraclub 323 Portage Ave., 221-4583
29. Best Club Theme Night 1) Ready Mix at Ozzie's 160 Osborne St. 452-9824 Ever wonder where all the hipsters disappear to on Thursday nights? Then obviously you've never been to Ready Mix. This club night sees more guys wearing scarves and striped sweaters than a Where's Waldo? book. Held together not by any specific musical style, but just by good DJs playing good music, Ready Mix has earned its reputation as the top theme night in Winnipeg.
2) Mod Night 3) '80s Night
30. Best Live Music Venue 1) Pyramid Cabaret 176 Fort St., 957-7777 The spacious dance floor. The Jagermeister specials. That weird skull-chandelier thing. Yes, there are tons of reasons to love the Pyramid Cabaret. A Winnipeg institution, the converted taxi garage on Fort Street has played host to the hottest local and touring bands since the mid-'90s, back when it was the Spectrum. Whether you're an indie, rock, pop, punk, metal or electronica fan, the Pyramid is your hookup for live music in the 'Peg.
2) The Royal Albert Arms 48 Albert St., 943-8433 3) The Zoo 160 Osborne St., 452-9824
31. Best Local Band 1) Jet Set Satellite Arguably one of the 'Peg's most successful exports, Jet Set Satellite has been burning up stages (and rock radio charts) for over a decade. Still, the band's rise hasn't been without its rough patches - including career-stalling label woes with Nettwerk Records in the mid-2000s. Still, Trevor Tuminski and co. are a resilient bunch, and their latest effort, 2008's End of an Era, is a powerful nod to that fact.
2) The Waking Eyes 3) The Weakerthans
32. Best New Local CD 1) Inward Eye - EP Uptown readers have been waiting a long time for this one - and that's putting it lightly. The Erickson brothers - who generated some serious buzz on the strength of their incendiary live show and inked a deal with J. Records back in 2005 - finally surfaced with a debut four-song EP earlier this year. An energetic Who/Clash-inspired romp, this disc is no doubt a taste of what's to come - and we're told that a full album will drop Aug. 18.

2)Dreadnaut 3)Tele
34. Best Winnipeg Record Label 1) Smallman Records Founded in 1997, local hardcore/punk imprint Smallman Records has grown to become a major player in Canada's independent music scene. Representing hometown heavy-hitters such as Propagandhi, Comeback Kid and Sights & Sounds as well as out-of-town acts such as Misery Signals, Passenger Action and Sylvie, the super organized (and super nice) folks over at Smallman are passionate about the bands on their roster - and it shows. After all, it takes dedication (and mad organizational skills) to run a label and a management agency with a skeleton staff.
2) Transistor 66 3) G7 Welcoming Committee
35. Best Gym/Yoga Studio 1) Moksha Yoga Unit 7, 2 Donald St., 452-5535 If you're a big fan of working up a sweat, but not a fan of running around in circles or riding on some sweat-encrusted exercise bike to do it, then the hot yoga offered at Moksha Yoga is for you. Offering classes ranging from 60 to 90 minutes seven days a week, Winnipeg's first Moksha Yoga studio will help you get into shape, improve your immune system, and help you understand exactly what people are talking about when they reference the "Corpse Pose" at parties.
2) YMCA Several Winnipeg Locations 3) Shapes Fitness Centre Several Winnipeg Locations
36. Best Place to Get Pampered 1) Ten Spa 10th Floor, 222 Broadway Ave., 946-6520 You've had a rough week, slugger. Go on, you know you have. You deserve a little bit of fine treatment to make up for having to do all those TPS Reports. Have a full-body Swedish massage to melt that tension away, and then rejuvenate yourself with a "Head-to-Toe Fully Loaded Detox Facial." If you're feeling generous, you can bring along the rest of the office and book one of Ten Spa's party packages, which can accommodate up to 24 people and, should you decide that one day at Ten Spa isn't enough, they can book you for an overnight stay at the Hotel Fort Garry, so you can wake up and do the whole thing over again tomorrow.

The Urban Bakery sports some of the sweetest shoes this side of 1980.TUB's selection doesn't stop at just footwear, though, as it also carries some of the dopest hip hop and skate clothes any guy could ever dream of adorning his closet with. Yup, TUB's not just a head shop.

40. Coolest New Clothing Store 1) American Apparel 108 Osborne St., 294-9273 Sure, we were all sad when Collective Cabaret closed down, but to replace it with an American Apparel was a dream come true for gold lamé enthusiasts around the city. Those who are looking for something a little less shiny can pick up one of the store's signature, logo-free cotton Ts, or any number of vintage-California inspired dresses, hoodies or pairs of tights in every colour visible to the human eye. For more daring shoppers, one-piece rompers and, of course, those classic, gold lamé hotpants are always an option.
