Gone too soon Remembering mashup pioneer DJ AMAnthony Augustine DJ AM tr.im/dj_am_mixes; tr.im/dj_am_mixes2; trvsdjam.com - On Aug. 28, mashup pioneer DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) was found dead in his apartment in New York City. He was 36. Although Goldstein's struggles with addiction were well known and the popular DJ had been sober for 11 years, it has been reported that his recent near-death experience (he survived a fiery plane crash), combined with a recent breakup and possibly the medication he was prescribed after the accident may have triggered a relapse. Goldstein had been active in the recovery community, helping other addicts get help and stay clean. He was also working with MTV to create an Intervention-style show in which he helped young drug users and alcoholics get their lives back on track. It is not known if the network will air finished episodes. "Age is a matter of feelings, not years. So the more I experience, feel and go through, the older and wiser I get, and the more my character is shaped by what I felt," the DJ told Uptown in an interview last year. "Not even so much how you felt, but how you dealt with it. If you stuff it down or run and hide, you don't really grow the way you do if you allow yourself to go through it. I have been through some shit, but so has everyone." Known for his genre-bending DJ sets that touched on everything from vintage hip hip to forward-thinking club cuts, Goldstein had recently been collaborating with Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker on the Fix Your Face mix series. He was also offering technical advice on the new DJ Hero game and will be a playable character.
