List of Neologisms on The Simpsons
tinyurl.com/9gakd — Planet Simpson, by Canadian writer Chris Turner, is an exhaustive analysis of The Simpsons but only briefly looks at the effect the show has had on language. Users of the massive online encyclopedia Wikipedia have gone further and created an extensive list of words created by writers of the popular, long-running show. This comprehensive list of terms includes definitions of classic phrases such as “dorkus malorkus,” “Jeebus” and “meh.”

The Arcade Firewww.platesanimation.com — Catching this video on MuchMusic or PunchMuch isn’t the easiest thing to do, but you can stream The Arcade Fire’s Neighbourhood 3 (Power Out) animated video along with other clips for The Shins (So Says I), Mogwai (Hunted by a Freak) and El-P (Stepfather Factory) from this site.

Winnipeg Craigslistwinnipeg.craigslist.org — The next time you want to carpool down to a gig in Minneapolis or buy James Brown’s Hell on vinyl, you might want to check out craigslist. Originally started back in 1995 as a way for people in San Francisco to get the word out about events in their community, the site quickly expanded into an extensive network of free listings in cities around the world. EBay might hold the biggest market share for online auctions, but craigslist is definitely one of the biggest sites offering free listings on such a wide range of topics.

Kenneth Lavalleewww.knnth.com — Fresh from a show at Winnipeg’s newest grassroots gallery, The Barber Shop, U of M student Kenneth Lavallee has recently had one of his designs selected to be printed by the user-driven T-shirt company Threadless. This online portfolio contains over 20 of his imaginative illustrations.

The Royal Albert MySpace Site www.myspace.com/theroyalalbert — I guess the impact MySpace has had on our culture is pretty clear when the legendary Royal Albert Arms has its own spot on the popular networking site. Along with some basic info about the club, you can also stream tracks from Albert regulars such as Multiple Partners, local hype and John Smith. Be sure to add the club to your list of friends if you are already a MySpace member.

DJ Mag Top 100www.djmag.com — Tiesto no longer reigns supreme, but don’t expect to see a drum ’n’ bass, techno or house DJ selected for the top slot. Dominated by trance DJs since the mid-’90s, the Top 100 list won’t be much different in 2005 — Germany’s Paul Van Dyk has been selected through the online poll as the top DJ in the world. All this really means is that Van Dyk’s already over-inflated booking price will go up 25 per cent.

Negative Beatswww.negativebeats.com — Negative Beats may not have the best design, but its massive inventory of free MP3s is worth digging through. The site lists only the titles of songs, so you have to spend some time with the search tool, or you can just start going through the song titles. You may get frustrated but there is usually something worth downloading. Recent visits have yielded What Happened to Soy Bomb by The Eels, some tracks from Rufus Wainwright and some Audioslave.
