NES-ified Covers — tinyurl.com/bj37t
— While more and more electronic-music producers are
relying heavily on software-based synths, drum machines, samplers
and sequencers, there are still people dabbling in outboard
gear. This collection of eight-bit covers of popular artists
such as R.E.M., Slayer and Radiohead features songs reworked
using the sounds of Nintendo’s classic video-game system.
If you’re wondering what Stairway to Heaven or Yellow
sounds like using only rewired sound sources from an NES,
you should download these tracks before they’re pulled
from the site. Be patient, it’ll be a slow download.
Evol Intent— www.myspace.com/evolintent
— Atlanta-based drum ’n’ bass trio Evol
Intent is scheduled to make its first appearance in Winnipeg
on Dec. 17 as part of Extra Strength Saturday’s one-year
anniversary party. While attendance at electronic music events
has been dwindling over the past few years, Extra Strength
Saturdays at Die Maschine has slowly built a loyal following
of drum ’n’ bass fans. The eve is primarily for
developing local talent, but a number of special guests have
performed over the last year. Along with featuring up-and-comers
Evol Intent, the anniversary show will include appearances
by Fargo’s Dextrious and locals Buzblaze, Dexx and Whupass.
Stream four Evol Intent tracks from their MySpace site.
Digg vs. Dot — diggvsdot.com
— Since launching during the Internet boom of the late
1990s, Slashdot has been the premier source for technology-related
information on the web. Hot on Slashdot’s heels is been
the user-driven tech-news site Digg. Slightly different than
Slashdot, Digg “combines social bookmarking, blogging,
RSS, and non-hierarchical editorial control.” While
Slashdot may have a fiercely loyal group of users, Digg’s
innovative system also has some benefits. Both sites get unique
content added by their users, and duplication between the
sites has been occurring on a regular basis. Digg vs. Dot
tracks the cross-posting on the two popular sites.
Graffitigen.com — www.graffitigen.com
— While the Exchange District Biz might think that
all graffiti is a blight that must be quickly removed, anyone
who has taken the time to seek out some of the work of Winnipeg’s
street artists knows it’s an integral part of the cultural
fabric of this city. If you want to create your own tags without
worrying about getting busted, this online graf generator
allows you to customize your website, blog or signature with
tags that you can alter using their free tool.
Tvgasm — tvgasm.com
— It might not win a Pulitzer Prize for reporting, but
Tvgasm is becoming an increasingly reliable source for gossip
and inside information from the entertainment industry. Recent
breaking stories include Mischa Barton’s Janet Jackson
moment, drunken fights on The Real World and insider info
from Martha Stewart’s program The Apprentice.
DMC World Championship Video
— www.dmcworld.com/technics2005/video.asp
— Local turntablist DJ Brace wasn’t able to repeat
as Canadian DMC champion this year, but you can check out
winning sets from the past five world championships on this
official site.
