MEG Montreal — www.megmontreal.com
— Spread out over four days at three different venues, the
seventh edition of the annual MEG Montreal looks to have one of
the best lineups to date. The fest features a broad spectrum of
electronic, rock and hip hop acts — Germany’s Superpitcher
(moody, heartbreaker techno), Brazil’s DJ Marlboro (deep
and dirty baile funk), California’s Peanut Butter Wolf (rare
groove/hip hop), Ontario’s Broken Social Scene (lush rock)
and England’s Optimo (grab bag electronic) are all on the
bill — and there is still time to cash in your Aeroplan
miles, book some time off and see a bunch of performers who won’t
likely be making it to Winnipeg anytime soon. In addition to the
official festival, Canadian techno icon Richie Hawtin will be
debuting his new project, Transitions, on Oct. 22 alongside rising
minimal-techno star Marc Houle, who will give his first live performance
in Canada, and Argentina’s Ernesto. Relying even more heavily
on micro edits, digital compositions, custom software and automation
techniques, Hawtin’s latest experiment is sure to stir up
the electronic music community.
Our Bombers— www.ourbombers.com
— By many accounts, Jim Daley has been a complete bust since
taking the reins of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from Dave Richie
last year. With only three games left in the season and all hope
of making the playoffs extinguished, this is the place to start
the “Bring back Reinebold!” chants.
On the Download — www.bostonphoenix.com/onthedownload
— On the Download is one of the better MP3 blogs out there.
The site features new tracks from Buster Rhymes (Touch It), Cave
In (Down the Drain) and The Strokes (You Only Live Once), so you’ll
quickly be filling your hard drive after a few visits. Be sure
to check out the high-quality Nirvana bootlegs from 1991 that
were recently uploads by the fine folks at Buddyhead. Tracks include
Aneurysm, Drain You, Breed and Negative Creep.
Google Reader — www.google.com/reader
— Another week, another new Google application. This
one is designed to help you gather your Really Simple Syndication
(RSS) feeds in one place. RSS allows users to easily subscribe
to content from a growing number of sites. With so much information
to sift through daily, Google Reader should help you organize
content from across the web.
Flickr Memory — www.pimpampum.net/memry
— If you have difficulty remembering what you had for
breakfast, you might get pretty frustrated with this site. A variation
of the classic game Memory, this version uses images scraped from
the popular photo-hosting site Flickr.
World Cup 2006 — fifaworldcup.yahoo.com
— One of the largest and most watched sporting events, the
World Cup is a special time for soccer fans. The qualifying rounds
for the tournament are almost complete, and the big show is slated
to take place in a number of German cities in June 2006. While
there were a few qualification surprises, don’t expect to
be cheering for Canada next June.
Subject to Change — www.dyslex6.com
— Want to participate in the annual Send + Receive festival?
Call 949-9134, ext. 6, with your question for Quebec-based performance
artist Alexis O’Hara. During the Oct. 14 performance of
the artist’s Subject to Change project, a custom-built animal-machine
hybrid will answer your questions to kickoff the festival.
