Guilty Pleasures
People list the songs they love by the artists they hate
Anthony Augustine
Out of 5 — www.outof5.com
— While the premise behind this project is simple —
10 songs are selected each week by a different individual based
on a weekly theme — that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t
be making this site part of your regular surfing routine. You
can stream the weekly mix or download the individual tracks in
a zip file. The theme of the current mix is Actually Not That
Bad — Songs We Secretly Love From Artists We Openly Hate
and features tracks from International Noise Conspiracy, R.E.M.
and Blink 182. Unfortunately, there is no archive, so you will
have to keep checking back until they set up a podcast or RSS
feed.
From a Basement on the Hill II —
www.elliottsmithbsides.com/BasementIIDemos.htm
— If you didn’t get your Elliot Smith fix from the
brilliantly tragic From a Basement on a Hill, 22 tracks recorded
between 2001-2003 have been leaked to the web nearly two years
after the singer’s apparent suicide. Ranging from the rock-fuelled
Abused to the gentle minimalism of High Times, these lo-fi recordings
beautifully capture Smith’s raw emotion.
NBA Source — nbasource.blogspot.com
— Hockey may be getting all the attention in the media right
now after the NHL’s extended break, but the basketball season
is right around the corner. The NBA Source is a good place to
catch up with what has been happening during a busy off-season
full of trades, free-agent signings and contract negotiations.
Seth Ferranti #18205-083 —
gorillaconvict.com
— Prison-based writer Seth Ferranti is a regular contributor
to the notorious Vice, and his column on doing time in a federal
prison has been a great addition to the magazine. Ferranti is
serving a 25-year-minimum sentence for drug trafficking, and his
frank look into prison life is ‘captivating.’ You
can view excerpts from his other articles and books on this site.
Diplo — www.formdiplo.com
— Diplo won’t be the backing DJ when his partner,
M.I.A., rolls into town with Gwen Stefani this November. Nevertheless,
you can download a recent performance from the Florida-based DJ
for XM Radio, an MP3 of the Arcade Fire covering the Yeah Yeah
Yeahs’ Maps live and a bunch of Diplo re-edits that you’ll
want to add to your digital collection.
Tiga — www.tiga.uk.com
— One of the featured performers at MEG Montreal, Canada’s
electro wonder kid, Tiga, has finally finished his debut album.
After bursting onto the scene with his clever remake of Corey
Hart’s Sunglasses at Night, Tiga released a series of successful
singles, including last summer’s homage to Public Enemy,
Louder Than Bomb. The first video from his new disc can be streamed
from this site
The Hype Machine — hype.non-standard.net
— The Hype Machine is a handy tool that scans popular music
blogs and collects recent uploads, making it easy to follow a
diverse collection of contributing blogs, podcasts and streaming
sites.
