Secrets from the cookie tree
Site offers copycat recipe for Keebler cookies and other treats
Anthony Augustine
Copykat — www.copykat.com
— If you really want to try and replicate the dish you
had at PJ Chang’s in Minneapolis, or at 50 Cent’s
favourite hangout, Boston Market, this collection of knock-off
recipes will probably have what you’re looking for.
Don’t expect to find recipes from every restaurant chain,
but the site does have a large selection of dishes to chose
from.
Flick Off — www.flickr.com/groups/flick_off/
— After Internet giant Yahoo acquired the popular photo
site Flickr, dedicated users of the online storage site quickly
established their own web group to follow the implications
of the merger. More than an outlet of dissent, Flick Off represents
a new form of expression that blurs the lines between protest
and art.
Ghostly International —
www.ghostly.com/mp3/
— Home to a diverse roster of talented electronic acts,
Seattle-based Ghostly International has quickly established
itself as a label to watch. The site offers a free batch of
MP3s from artists who have recently released discs, and tracks
from Mobius Band, Skeletons & The Girl-Faced Boys, and
Matthew Dear’s Audion project can be found on the site.
AV Club — avclub.com/content/
— Best known for its satirical outlook on the world,
The Onion also has a successful entertainment offshoot called
AV Club. Covering music, cinema, video games and books, AV
Club is a stellar example of what an e-zine should be.
Diplo Radio Mix — tinyurl.com/ar37b
— One of the best DJs to roll through Winnipeg
in recent years, Diplo totally stole the show from RJD2 when
they both performed at the annual Jazz Winnipeg Festival in
spring. This live radio performance from Houston is much more
hip hop-oriented than the floor-filling set of underground
’80s, baile funk, reggaeton, mash-ups and old school
beats he dropped at the Pyramid, but it’s still worth
checking out.
G7’s Blog — www.g7welcomingcommittee.com/blog/
— While you’ll get your share of razor-sharp political
analysis and sarcasm on G7’s new blog, you can probably
also expect some posts about beer, cats and metal bands. With
new albums by Propagandhi and Mico on the horizon —
and an old song by The Weakerthans on the Wedding Crashers
soundtrack — 2005 is shaping up to be a great year for
the local music label.
Beastie Boys — www.beastieboys.com/remixers.php
— Even though the Beastie Boys have built their career
on sampling other artists’ music, they haven’t
always been open to sharing their own material. Even as recently
as a few years ago, they were often not interested in legally
letting their music be used in the public domain. Even when
2manydjs tried to license a BB track for one of their mixes,
the Beasties refused to let their song be included on the
groundbreaking mix CD. Something must have made them change
their mind because they have made a cappellas and samples
from their back catalogue available for download on their
site.
