World Car Free Day asks motorists to think about the environment
Anthony Augustine
Car-Free Day — Sept. 22 — www.carfreeday.ca
— If you’re sick of high gas prices, you might
want to look into changing your habits rather than boycotting
retailers on certain days or only buying gas from specific
companies. Both of these ideas have been circulating via e-mail
over the past few weeks but are unlikely to have any lasting
effect on prices. World Car Free Day might not be any more
effective than the e-mail schemes, but it may finally get
people to think about how they can reduce their impact on
the environment by making a few small changes to their lifestyle.
Be sure to register your car-free commute when you visit the
website.
Needle Drops— www.neumu.net/needledrops
— This long-running e-zine may not have the type of
regular content updates you would expect from a high-profile
blog, but with an archive filled with articles on Barcelona’s
infamous Sonar festival, reviews of Germany’s party-rocking
Kompact crew and an article on M.I.A, it’s easy to see
why Needle Drops is a remarkable source for information and
insight into electronic music.
The Lemon Red Mix Tape Series
— www.lemon-red.org/mix/
— Although it’s only been around since June, The
Lemon Red Mix Tape Series has already featured artists like
DJ/rupture and Montreal’s Ghislain Poirier. Containing
everything from DJ Assault’s Make That Booty Clap to
Led Zeppelin’s All of My Love, Caps & Jones’
mix may be the best of the bunch. Grab the free download before
the end of the month.
Boulevard of Broken Songs Video
— www.nauticaltech.com/~josh/greenoasis/
— Boulevard of Broken Songs, the breakout mash-up
track from San Francisco producer Party Ben, slices together
bits from Green Day, Oasis, Travis, Aerosmith and Eminem into
one of the best singles of the year. Now the song has morphed
into a video by Josh (JoshMosh) Tauber.
Music From The O.C. —
www.musicfromtheoc.com
— Depending on who you talk to, The O.C. is either
the coolest show on TV or one of the worst. One thing difficult
to dispute is the fact that it has been able to effectively
use music to shape the mood of each episode and has raised
the profile of the acts featured. This site breaks down the
music from each episode and also boasts an active messageboard.
Tegan and Sara Mash-Up Contest
— www.acidplanet.com/contests/fusionflash
— It seems like everyone is jumping on the mash-up bandwagon,
and sister act Tegan and Sara is the latest outfit to officially
make its material available to the public. You can download
samples from their tracks Walking With a Ghost and Speak Slow
from the Acid Planet site. If you need a reference point for
the contest, you can always check out Party Ben’s bootleg
version of Walking With a Ghost, which Sara dissed in an interview
with an Australian magazine.
