Mmm, tastes like chicken
The Meatrix 2 serves up tasty, palatable activism
Anthony Augustine
The Meatrix 2 — www.meatrix2.com
— Animal-rights activists have been in the news lately,
but for all the wrong reasons. McCartney and Morrissey are rambling
on about Canada’s seal hunt, but they’re doing more
harm than good. On the other side of the activism spectrum, Freerange
has taken a different approach in trying to expose the problems
with factory farming. Rather than holding useless press conferences
and making threats that have no real impact, the group has again
created a slick, informative Flash film that manages to tackle
some heavy issues without diluting the message.
Cadence Weapon— cadenceweaponmusic.com
— Cadence Weapon may be a rookie, but he’s already
proved he’s the Wayne Gretzky of Edmonton hip hop. Fresh
from well-received performances at SXSW, the 20-year-old MC rolled
into the Royal Albert Arms on April 1 and proceeded to work the
crowd over with his deft flow, heavy-handed beats and manic stage
presence. Smashed bottles, slam-dancing and pure energy were packed
into his nearly hour-long set. His DJ was no slouch, either, effortlessly
dishing out bass-heavy electro beats, chopped-up hip hop breaks
and nimble scratches to a small but appreciative crowd. Download
two tracks from the Edmonton MC’s debut, Breaking Kayfabe,
one track from his mixtape Cadence Weapon Is the Black Hand and
three bootleg remixes (Lady Sovereign, Ciara, Ghostface).
High Score — highscoremovie.com
— While the documentary film Game Over: Kasparov and the
Machine captured the legendary chess match between the IBM-programmed
Deep Blue and the Russian chess grandmaster, High Score follows
one man’s quest to break the 1982 world record for the classic
Atari game Missile Command. Bill Carlton is hoping to break 80
million points in a marathon session that will last nearly two
days — pretty good value for a quarter. Watch the trailer
for the battle being dubbed “Man versus Missile Command.”
Adam Marshall — tinyurl.com/rrzbh
— Toronto’s Adam Marshall has always been one of Canada’s
best techno DJs, even if he hasn’t packed up and moved to
Europe. While many of Marshall’s cohorts (Jeff Milligan,
Mike Shannon, Jake Fairley) have relocated, Marshall continues
to turn out some of the best DJ mixes around from his home base
in T-Dot. Featuring A-list tracks from Luciano, Heartthrob, Alex
Smoke and Sleeparchive, Marshall’s Maximal Mix shows why
his name continually comes up when the second wave of Canadian
techno artists is discussed. With a slew of 12-inch releases on
the horizon, Marshall has been busy in the studio and is quickly
establishing himself as a skilled techno producer who will push
the boundaries.

— Web-zine Resident Advisor has thrown its hat in the podcasting
ring with a mix series featuring techno wizard Troy Pierce, new-school
minimal DJ Jay Haze and Fabric regular Margarat Dygas. You can
download the individual mixes or subscribe to the podcast feed
from this site.
