St. Elsewhere is almost here
Danger Mouse and Cee-lo release album tracks to the web

Gnarls Barkley — www.gnarlsbarkley.com
— Infamous New York producer Danger Mouse has teamed up
with Atlanta rapper Cee-lo to form Gnarls Barkley. Although the
debut St. Elsewhere isn’t set to hit stores until early
May, GB’s label decided to push up the release of the first
single to try and combat its inevitable leak to peer-to-peer networks.
The strategy seemed to work, with Crazy rocketing to the top of
the singles sales chart in the U.K. based only on the number of
digital downloads. This is a first and will likely force record
companies to re-evaluate how they market and release high-profile
artists. With the continuing shift to digital distribution of
music, movies and TV, Crazy certainly won’t be the last
web-released track to top the charts. You can preview Crazy and
Go Go Gadget Gospel from the Gnarls Barkley site.
Webby Awards 2006— www.webbyawards.com
— Time may have called the Webbys “the online Oscars,”
but the awards don’t confine themselves just to movies.
With a wide range of categories covering everything from online
activism to the weirdest of the web, the Webbys are a great place
to discover sites you may have overlooked in the past year. Heavy
hitters such as Boing Boing, The Onion and Snopes may get all
the attention, but the real strength of the awards is that small
sites with a dedicated community of users can still come out ahead.
Some underdog sites to watch for are: Freakonomics (best copy/writing),
The Book of Cool (navigation), Mini Clip (games), justcurio.us
(Net art) and Open Secrets (politics).
The Rub — tinyurl.com/owlqr
— Five-time world champion DJ A-Trak is headlining Co-op
and Hunnicutt’s latest dance party, but Brooklyn remix crew
The Rub will surely turn heads on May 10 at The Empire. Known
for their eclectic party-rockin’ style, DJ Eleven, Cosmo
Baker and DJ Ayres should be rolling into the city with a stack
of fresh wax, custom re-edits and enough remixes to surprise even
the most dedicated trainspotter. You may want to book off May
11.
