Super Bowl Ads 2006 — sports.aol.com/nfl/superbowlads
— The media was all over the Pittsburgh Steelers before
Super Bowl XL, but the commercials that would accompany the telecast
seemed to get more press than the Seattle Seahawks. Super Bowl
airtime went for $2.5 million US for a 30-second spot this year,
and most companies debuted new commercials in hopes of getting
a lot of mileage out of them after captivating the public during
the big game. If you missed any of the ads that ran during the
Super Bowl, or if you just want to see the Bud Light office clip
again, all the spots are available for viewing on this site.
Idol Tryouts— idoltryouts.com
— Detroit’s Ghostly International might be one
of the best-kept secrets in the music biz. With a diverse roster
that includes rising techno star Matthew Dear, synth rockers Solvent
and left-field beatmaster Aeroc, the label is bracing for a big
year in ’06. Hitting the streets in March, Idol Tryouts
2 includes new material from D.C.’s Manhunter, Chicago’s
Kill Memory Crash and Atlanta’s Richard Devine. Canada’s
electronic music scene is also well represented, with Hamilton’s
Junior Boys, Vancouver’s Loscil and Montreal’s Tim
Hecker all contributing cuts to the two-disc comp. You can preview
some of the material with Ghostly’s built-in audio streamer.
Coachella 2006 — coachella.com
— Many online pundits were predicting a reformed Smashing
Pumpkins would headline Coachella, but it doesn’t look like
Billy Corgan has been able to get the group together in time.
To be held outside of L.A. from April 29 to 30, the festival will
feature performances by Depeche Mode, Tool, Daft Punk, Bloc Party
and over 70 other acts. Watch for the documentary that was filmed
last year to make it to Winnipeg theatres sometime this spring.
tomandandy — www.tomandandy.com
— Electronic duo tomandandy first came on the radar with
their stunning soundtrack for Roger Avery’s highly underrated
bank-heist flick Killing Zoe. Perfectly capturing the dark mood
of the film, the dynamic soundtrack has stood the test of time
and still sounds fresh in 2006. Although they’ve been busy
doing work for companies such as Nike, Boeing and Coke, the pair
have managed to find time to work on the soundtrack for the remake
of The Hills Have Eyes, which opens in March. On this site you
can download unreleased or reworked versions of tracks that appeared
in Mean Creek, The Rules of Attraction, Killing Zoe and other
projects the duo has been involved in.
5 Worst American Idol Auditions
— tinyurl.com/cb3n4
— Everybody knows the only thing worth watching on American
Idol is the auditions. After Simon Cowell destroys the dreams
of people who actually think they can sing, and after the hilarious
William Hung wannabes are gone, it’s time to change the
channel.
First Goatse — www.flickr.com/photos/tags/firstgoatse
— This Flickr photoset captures people’s first reaction
to infamous Internet meme Goatse. See if you can find porn icon
Ron Jeremy’s look of horror.
