McSatire with Cheese
Video game takes some shots at fast-food giant
Anthony Augustine
McDonald’s Video Game — www.mcvideogame.com
— Less subversive than The Meatrix or the Store Wars Flash
movies that were floating around last year, this mini-simulation
game allows you to look at the effects of the fast-food industry.
The game is obviously a simplistic representation of a number
of complex issues (environmentalism, globalization, corporate
culture), but it’s still fun to torch sick cows, overwork
your employees and increase your bottom line by using genetically
modified soy. With McDonald’s long history of suing anyone
who doesn’t think the Happy Meal is the best thing on the
planet, I wouldn’t be surprised if this game is hit with
a hefty lawsuit. Make sure to go through the tutorial before you
start to play — you’ll be glad you did.
MuchMusic VJ Search— www.muchmusic.com/vjsearch
— The jury is still out on whether Winnipegger Larissa
Tobacco has a shot at landing the new job at MuchMusic, but it
would be nice to see her pull it off. You can follow the 10-episode
reality program/contest every Monday night on Much, or you can
view clips from the show on this content-heavy portal for the
VJ search.
G7 Radio — www.g7welcomingcommittee.com/radio
— Between working on an upcoming DVD compilation and listening
to all the crappy bands that think they should be on their label,
the G7 guys have found the time to put together their first Internet
radio show. Obvious picks such as Cro-Mags, Dead Kennedys and
Head Hits Concrete get airtime, along with Karate, Shellac and
Dead Prez. You can subscribe to the podcast feed or download the
MP3 directly from the G7 Welcoming Committee site.
Mutek on the Road — www.encuentroelectronico.net/blog
— co.net/blog/ — Mutek is one of the premier electronic
music events in North America, but it has been expanding its reach
to Mexico and South America over the last two years by holding
a string of successful one-off events and mini-tours. Although
this blog is in Spanish, you can still enjoy videos of performances
from laptop guru Deadbeat and Montreal duo Skoltz_Kolgen, along
with Chile’s Marciano, Venezuela’s Mambotur and Columbia’s
Mami. If the lineup at last year’s Mutek is any indication,
you’ll likely see many of the artists who have played these
satellite events make it to Montreal in May.
DFA Radio Mixes — www.dfarecords.com/radiomixes
— DFA has now made three mixes available for free on their
site. These mixes feature a diverse collection of artists (Laurent
Garnier, Bad Brains, Radiohead, Hot Chip, Six Finger Satellite),
with label boss James Murphy and producer Juan Mclean getting
behind the decks to create these genre-bending collections. If
you’re a fan of the Beats in Space podcast, you’ll
want to add these mixes to your collection.
