The Good ol’ Hockey Game
Tournament’s web portal compliments the show
Anthony Augustine

The Tournament www.cbc.ca/thetournament — Best known for his rock and roll flick Hardcore Logo, director Bruce McDonald’s latest project The Tournament is a brilliant mockumentary that chronicles small town hockey culture and perfectly captures the sometimes absurd nature of organized sports. Overzealous parents, cross-town rivalries, love-triangles, a drunk coach, the racist dad and the sensible mom – The Tournament’s ensemble cast does a stellar job pulling off some of the best TV this side of Sunnyvale Trailer Park. CBC’s in-depth web portal for the unassuming program is packed with custom video clips from Briarside’s colourful crew of characters along with a Flash game, episode recaps and hockey tips from Dr. Singh.

Letterman & O’Reillynewsbusters.org/node/3454 — First it was Jon Stewart, now it is David Letterman going on the offensive with Fox’s Bill O’Reilly. While Letterman usually goes for Arsenio Hall-style lightweight questions that never really scratch below the surface, a visibly agitated Letterman takes O’Reilly to task on Iraq, Bush and his lack of respect for peace activist Cindy Sheehan.

Cocaine Cornercocainecorner.blogspot.com, www.divorcekevin.com, — While governments may be focused on crystal meth, it is obvious that cocaine isn’t going away anytime soon. While many blogs deal with the mundane aspects of people’s lives (what movie they watched, music they bought, food they ate), this New York-based writer uses his ongoing coke habit as fodder for his site. Funny, tragic and pathetic all at the same time, Cocaine Corner may or may not be real, but it still makes for a good read. I am surprised the folks at Vice didn’t think of this first.

Viral Video 2005urlx.org/ifilm.com/c7e5 — If you missed hip hop mega star Kayne West’s verbal beat down of George Bush on live TV, the Numa Numa guy’s web cam dance or Tom Cruise’s couch-jumping freak-out on Oprah, Viral Video has compiled the best clips from 2005.

The Legion of Doomwww.the-legion-of-doom.com — With their debut album delayed due to copyright concerns, mashup masters The Legion of Doom still have an uphill battle to see the release of their skilful retoolings of emo rockers such as Dashboard Confessional, Thursday and Taking Back Sunday. Along with two throwaway singles Dottie In a Car Crash and A Threnody For A Grand, you can still download L.O.D.’s underground hit Quiet Screaming.

Burning Man 2005scottlondon.com/photo/burning-man2005/ — Despite the rising cost to participate at the event, Burning Man is still a rare example of a temporary community that is able to come together every year and create a dynamic social experiment. This collection of one hundred photos from 2005 gives a vivid look at the free spirited group of people who seek sanctuary in the desert as part of the annual festival.

Extratastywww.extratasty.com — From the same web developers behind Threadless and 15 Megs of Fame, this community-driven database of drink recipes might be their most useful project yet. Launched within the past month, Extratasty is still developing its user base but with over 250 recipes added to the site last week, it won’t take long before this drink portal takes off.
