Apps for the ’Pod people
Tech heads will need these essential software tweaks for their iPods
Anthony Augustine
Seven must-have iPod applications —tinyurl.com/33on3xx
— Like it or not, Apple almost has a monopoly on digital music players. Even Bill Gates and his billions couldn’t come up with a player that would compete with the ubiquitous iPod. Considered by many to be a huge flop, the Zune has failed to gain any significant market share even after Microsoft dumped truckloads of money into R&D and marketing. If you’ve joined the Cult of Apple, be sure you have all the best back-door applications for your player. The seven pieces of software available on this site will ensure you obtain digital bliss, whether from some obscure bootleg of a Propagandhi show found on your buddy’s computer or some weird video you stripped from YouTube.
Face 2 Face—face2faceproject.com
— One of the longest-running conflicts in the world,
the struggle between the Palestinians and Israelis in the
Middle East has always been rooted in the belief that the
two cultures are diametrically different. What the Face
2 Face Project aims to do is bring the reality of the situation
down to a human level by comparing the similarities between
groups of people that believe they are so different. Along
with the web portion of the project, Face 2 Face has also
placed large-scale photo installations on both the Israeli
and the Palestinian sides of the border.
Best of Craigslist —
craigslist.org/about/best/all/
— In nearly every other city in North America except
Winnipeg, Craigslist is the de facto place for everything
from selling your old record collection to setting up anonymous
hook-ups while travelling. While the Winnipeg version of
the site is pathetic compared to the high-level activity
in most cities, you can still benefit from the absurd posts
that make the site less like a buy-and-sell portal and
more like a strange social hangout. Warning: probably not
safe for work or if you are easily offended.
Helvetica—
www.helveticafilm.com
— Recently premiered at the South by Southwest Film
Festival, Helvetica is a documentary about typeface. It
must have been tough to generate any hype for the film
at the notoriously overbooked fest, but judging by these
short clips Helvetica is something the folks at Cinematheque
should bring in.
Monkey Warfare—
myspace.com/flowerpowerisdead
— Another film that made the trek down to Austin
for South by Southwest is Reg Harkema’s Monkey Warfare,
starring former Winnipegger Nadia Litz and veteran Canadian
actor Don McKellar. Monkey Warfare premiered at the Toronto
International Film Festival to critical acclaim and will
be showing at Cinematheque from April 6 to 12. The trailer
and these clips from the film will give you a sneak preview
of what you can expect from the feature.
