Moody, Nolan among winners of prestigious International Songwriting Compettion
Locals shine in contest judged by stars

Winnipeg's Ruth Moody and Scott Nolan have been named among the winners of the prestigious International Songwriting Competition.
$cms.template("FP Related Items Module")Moody, one-third of the Juno-winning Wailin' Jennys, won top prize in the Gospel/Christian category for the song Storm Comin', while singer/songwriter Nolan earned third place in the Americana category.
The competition received over 16,000 entries from 112 countries, and winners were chosen by a panel of judges that included Tom Waits; Jeff Beck; Ozzy Osbourne; Robert Smith (The Cure); Tori Amos; McCoy Tyner; Kelly Clarkson; John Mayall; Monte Lipman (President, Universal Republic Records); and many others.
New Zealand songwriter Kimbra took top prize overall for the song Cameo Lover. The Grand Prize is ISC's highest honor, and prizes include $25,000 US cash and over $25,000 US in merchandise and services.

Winnipeg BBQ & Blues Festival set for August
New summer event combines rockin' blues with a Kansas City-certified barbecue contest

The Winnipeg BBQ & Blues Festival -- which will combine local, national and international blues performers with a Pit Masters barbecue competition -- will take place Aug. 17 to 19 at Red River Exhibition Park, organizers announced today (Mon., April 23).
Legendary Texas guitarist Jimmie Vaughan and the Tilt-A-Whirl Band will headline the festival's mainstage on Sat., Aug. 18 and other confirmed performers on the event's three stages include Vancouver's Jim Byrnes, gospel-blues trio The Sojourners, guitarist Steve Dawson, Saskatchewan's Little Miss Higgins and the cream of Winnipeg's crop, including Romi Mayes, Big Dave McLean and The Perpetrators.
$cms.template("FP Related Items Module")Culinary highlights of the BBQ & Blues Fest include a Friday night "Meat Ball", at which local restaurants will compete for the title of Burger Warz champion, and a two-day Pit Masters Championships barbecue competition, which will also feature demos and activities from the KCBS Great American BBQ Tour. The latter event has been sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, the world's largest, which runs 400 barbecue competitions around the globe. The grand champion of the Winnipeg Pit Masters competition will win a place at the Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational Barbecue Competition in Lynchburg, Tenn.
To prepare Winnipeggers for the barbecue event, the KCBS is offering a half-day, certified barbecue judges' course on May 12 at Red River Exhibition Park. Master judges from Tennessee will teach barbecue enthusiasts the skills required to become competition barbecue judges.
Finally, the BBQ & Blues Fest will also play host to the 5th annual House of Chrome show-and-shine of over 70 big truck rigs.
A limited number of early-bird, VIP weekend packages (which are the only tickets that will allow holders entry to the Meat Ball) go on sale on Thurs., April 26 at 10 a.m. for $32.50 plus agency fee at Ticketmaster, 780-SEAT or www.ticketmaster.ca
Weekend passes, for $37.50 and weekend day passes, for $22.50, will be made available once early-bird tickets sell out.

First up. . .
Kathleen Edwards' Winnipeg show, originally slated for last Saturday, April 14, has been rescheduled for Sat., Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. at the Garrick Centre.
Edwards postponed four shows last week and this in order to recover from a throat infection.
Tickets for the original date will be honoured at the door on Sept. 29. Ticketholders who can't attend the show on the new date can get refunds at their respective points of purchase.
Tickets are still available and can be purchased for $27.50 (plus charges) at all Ticketmaster Outlets, by calling 780-SEAT or at ticketmaster.ca

The West End Cultural Centre confirmed today (April 17) that former Constantines frontman Bry Webb will play at the hall at 8 p.m. on Sun., June 17.
Webb will perform songs from his 2011 release, Provider. Montreal-based experimental guitarist Snailhouse and Saskatchewan songsmith Zach Lucky will open.

Tickets for the show are on sale now for $15 in advance at the West End, Ticketmaster, Music Trader, and Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store. They'll cost $20 at the door.Manitoba Opera announced today (April 17) that it will present Rigoletto and Aida, two of Giuseppe Verdi's masterpieces, at the Centennial Concert Hall as part of its 40th anniversary season in 2012-13.
Rigoletto, the richly layered tale of the court jester and his daughter, will open the season on Nov. 24, 27, and 30, while Aida will be performed April 13, 16, and 19, 2013.
Winnipeg's dynamic Tracy Dahl will star as Gilda in Rigoletto; acclaimed American baritone Todd Thomas (Count de Luna in 2008's Il Trovatore) returns to sing the title role; tenor David Pomeroy (Don José in Carmen, 2010) returns as the Duke of Mantua; and Lauren Segal (Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, 2009) will sing Maddalena.
Canadian soprano Michele Capalbo, who first played to MO audiences as
Leonora in Il Trovatore in 2008, will sing the title role in Aida. Joining her will be Phil Ens (Sarastro in The Magic Flute, 2011) in the role of Ramfis and Winnipeg's Gregory
Dahl (Jokanaan in Salome, 2011) making his role debut as Amonasro.
Tyrone Paterson will conduct both productions. Rob Herriot will direct Rigoletto while Brian
Deedrick will helm Aida.
