Astron-6 gets its day

Father's Day
Originally set for release on the titular holiday this past June, Father’s Day, the first feature from Winnipeg genre filmmaking collective Astron-6, will finally have its world premiere at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival on Oct. 21.
The film began principal photography in August, 2010, at locations in and around Winnipeg. Producing the move are Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, of legendary exploitation film production and distribution house Troma Entertainment (The Toxic Avenger).
"The final result is absolutely the film we set out to make," says writer, director and co-star Adam Brooks. "It's an exciting, unpredictable adventure/comedy."
Online anticipation for the film has been widespread on horror and cult film websites since production began, with the film written up at the likes of Bloody-Disgusting.com, Chud.com, Twitchfilm.com and pre-eminent horror magazine Fangoria.
Ain’t It Cool News praised the film’s first trailer in summer 2010, advising readers to "be prepared for a head stomping, father raping, karate punching, eye slashing, arm running over-ing, naked girl chainsaw wielding, penis drugging good time!" Exploitation, cult and horror film website Couchcutter.com posted online diaries from the movie’s set.
The film was also recently hyped by the likes of Torontoist.com — partner to Canadian national newspaper The Globe and Mail — which calls it "a delight for SFX and gore fans."
Brooks secured Troma’s involvement after sending Kaufman the rough edit of a fake trailer for the project. Co-starring in and collaborating on various aspects of the film were fellow Astron-6 members Conor Sweeney, Jeremy Gillespie, Matthew Kennedy and Steve Kostanski, whose featurette Manborg will have its Canadian debut at TADFF.
"The collaboration has been stressful, bringing some of us closer together and driving some of us further apart," Brooks says. "We definitely won't be sharing a contract again."
