There may actually be some truth to that stereotype that teenagers think they know everything — or at least there is on Minneapolis quartet Howler’s first album. America Give Up is made of 11 tracks of hipster dissatisfaction, from the über-adolescent musings on Wailing ("I’m so tired of making out") to instant gratification on This One’s Different ("I want you right now/I need you right now"). That said, these kids seem to know their way around their guitars pretty damn well; having been picked up by Rough Trade is proof enough of the talent on display here. America Give Up is full of infectious rockabilly fronted by singer Jordan Gatesmith’s bass-y Joey Ramone. Standouts include Told You Once, for its surf-noir riffs and gnarly guitar solo backed by handclaps, and single Back of Your Neck, for being the record's best example of '50s revival rockabilly.
