CD Reviews
Brooklyn-based five-piece Weird Owl’s sophomore album Build Your Beast A Fire is made of the same stuff as your dad’s dusty record collection: ’70s-inspired riffs and psychedelic lyrics. Tiny Sleeping Animals starts with a bout of thick, super-’60s acoustic picking and launches into far-out lyrics about Ouija boards and "feeling like I’m 10 feet tall." Parallax Eyes is a reverb-heavy grunge song with echoing vocals. The sound gets old several songs before Mountains on Top of Buried Stars, which drags noticeably. Strangely, the album ends on Build Your Beast A Fire I, although part two is the seventh song. Maybe this confusion explains why this album doesn’t quite get where it’s trying to go. Weird Owl’s vintage riffs and retro vocals get old fast — no pun intended.
