He looks like every handsome country hunk you ever saw staring down from the QX-104 billboards around town and sounds like every radio friendly country hunk you’ve ever heard playing on that station, too. Chad Brownlee hails from Kelowna, B.C., played a lot of hockey and was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in 2003 but after a couple of years in the minors riding the buses turned his attention to a career in country music. The results are promising in that this sounds just like Nashville if that’s your kind of country — a bunch of songs with slick, first-rate pop/rock production that shade toward c&w with the help of a little pedal steel sweetening now and then and Brownlee’s twang and drawl vocals, which hint that Garth Brooks might be his role model. The songs about the guys night out, loving the girl next door and playing the radio loud are the straight-forward, undemanding, easy listening that a lot of "today’s country" fans seem to be looking for.
Chad Brownlee opens for Dierks Bentley at the Burton Cummings Theatre on Feb. 23.
