CD Reviews
Calgary singer/songwriter Wil’s fifth disc is pretty catchy, pretty sweet and pretty great. Opening with the Paul Simon-esque Baby Talk and paying homage to some late-Beatles tweaks on Walking Around, Wil doesn’t stray far from the straight-up voice and acoustic guitar-based sound that he’s become known for over the past decade. When he does, on such tracks as Oak Tree, the electric guitar is haunting and simple — much like Wil’s lyrics — while on "In My Skin" the horn section helps this bouncy popper come to life. Closing with the spontaneous-sounding Someday, Wil’s latest is a perfect progression of his work.
Wil plays the West End Cultural Centre with CR Avery on Nov. 25.
