Les Surveillantes

La Racine Carrée du Coeur (Independent)

Our Rating: star star star half-star

Formed in 2006, Les Surveillantes features current and former members of local francophone bands Kraink, ...and then nothing, Kin and Idéfix. La Racine Carrée du Coeur (the square root of the heart) is the group’s first full-length album. Sung exclusively in French, the lyrics present a challenge for Anglophone listeners, but the liner notes do contain English conversions. No translation is required for the music, however. This is lighthearted folk amplified by exquisite harmonies, the occasional guest appearance (most notably Daniel Roy’s beatboxing on Coma) and Danielle Burke’s beautiful voice.
