Putting Music In Its Place

Lagwagon(Fat Wreck Chords)

Our Rating: star star star half-star

User Average Rating: star star star star star

Box sets are usually for super fans and this one from Californian punk band Lagwagon isn't any different. Unless you're in love with the group or you missed out on these '90s punk staples, there’s not much of a reason to check out the re-mastered versions — unless, of course, you want all the bonus content. You can spend lots of time sifting through all the photos, reading the retrospective blurbs written by the band members and listening to all the bonus tracks, which include demos and alternate versions of some of your favourite Lagwagon tunes. But the best thing is just listening to these records front to back and seeing how the band evolved. The extra muddy production on Duh makes it obvious that Lagwagon recorded that album in three days while Hoss continues to be one of its strongest efforts, spawning classics such as Violins, Sleep and Ride the Snake. Lagwagon never achieved as much popularity as some of its peers, but it was the first act to sign with Fat Wreck Chords and this release is a great reminder to dust off the first five records of its catalogue.
