Querkus

Leaves Make Way for the Stars(Independent)

Our Rating: star star star half-star

Karen Asmundson and Edgar Ozolins have been working at this project for nearly a decade. In that time, Querkus (check your Dr. Who for the reference) has evolved from a hybrid of classical piano (her) and electronic atmospherics (him) into a true blend of an electric band with acoustic piano. Fans of Kate Bush and Tori Amos will be pleased, as the piano and Asmundson’s voice evoke both performers, but the downtempo, dark and often pastoral vibe of these 11 songs avoids grandiose and pompous excesses. Well worth several careful listens.
