Christian Mistress

Possession(Relapse Records)

Our Rating: star star star half-star

If you know your Witchfynde from your Witchfinder General, Christian Mistress is right up your alley. The Olympia, Wash. band rock a New Wave of British Heavy Metal vibe, a late '70s/early '80s style of music that included such acts as Iron Maiden, Angel Witch and Diamond Head. The latter's influence is all over Conviction, an up-tempo Helpless-esque track that would fit in nicely on DH’s landmark Lightning to the Nations album. Vocalist Christine Davis even sings a bit like Sean Harris, although his heavy metal croon is comparably sweet and innocent to her throaty tone. In fact, it’s the band’s frontwoman that keeps Christian Mistress from sounding like a complete NWOBHM rip off, Davis’s singing style far sexier than your typical Saxon song. That said, except for Davis and the fact that Christian Mistress contains a smidgeon of stoner rock (Haunted Hunted has me thinking Kyuss, not Cloven Hoof), there’s not much new here. But hey, tradition’s important, even in heavy metal.
