Al Tuck

Under Your Shadow (New Scotland Records)

Our Rating: star star star half-star

Hirsute P.E.I. guy Al Tuck keeps it real on his latest full-length album and track for track Under Your Shadow is a fine listen front to back. The singer/songwriter clearly knows his way around a song and while most of his work here leans toward the reflective and even gloomy, his super laid back delivery and the uncluttered feel of the recording will keep you coming back for more. The mid-album live track Hello, Prince Edward Island is so lo-fi it almost hurts, but everything else is more than appealing. Tuck’s voice kind of wanders around the notes he’s trying to hit, but that only seems to make Under Your Shadow sound that much more direct. Includes a Bob Dylan-esque version of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel as a hidden track.
