CD Reviews
Guitar-based blues is where it’s always been for Brent Parkin, and songs by the likes of B.B. King, Little Walter and Arthur (Big Boy) Crudup are what bring the ‘vintage’ to this collection, which veers from the West Coast to Chicago and even takes a side trip to a bluesy arrangement of Big Band composer Sammy Nestico’s Jumpin’ at the Woodside. Co-producers Parkin and drummer Ken McMahon wisely keep things simple, focusing mostly on Brent’s always pristine guitar-work. Four Parkin originals grace this disc, but none is more powerful than Dedication Blues, which recalls Brent’s brush with death in 2007. Classic, heartfelt stuff.
