"We play rock ’n’ roll. Sometimes we’re a little twangy, so the rockabilly guys might like us. Sometimes we play fast, so the punks might like it. Rock ’n’ roll — that’s what we play," says rock ’n’ rollin’ drummer Ryan Filteau of The Vibrating Beds.
"People want us to say we’re a garage band, but I think we play rock ’n’ roll. We’ll leave it at that," he says.
The Vibrating Beds have been tearing up local stages since 2009. Some of the members were in a pretty swingin’ rock ’n’ roll band called the Sweet Nothings.
The current Vibrating Beds are a trio featuring Filteau (Stranded, ex-Sweet Nothings) on kit/vocals, guitarist/vocalist Jenna Dangerous (ex-The Sweet Nothings) and Leif Gobeil (High Class Low Lifes, ex-Kids on Fire) on bass/vocals.
The concise chemistry between the three makes for precision rock ’n’ roll.
Filteau says The Vibrating Beds are ready to release a follow-up seven-inch vinyl EP to last year’s self-titled seven-incher on Transistor 66 Records. He says the band is not really interested in releasing an album at this juncture.
"We’d rather release singles," he says. "The (new) single is called Sing the Blues. The A-side is a 6/8 blues song called Six Eight. The other songs are Baby and Let Me Be."
Filteau says smiley SubCity keyboard player Kevin McLean made a special appearance on the new single.
"He did some old-school Hammond organ on Six Eight," he says before mentioning details of the release party for the seven-incher. "We’re planning on releasing it on March 10."
U street beaters should hit The Vibrating Beds on Facebook or visit the waiting room of Transistor66.com (for some upcoming unreleased trax!) or thevibratingbeds.com for sweet deets about the single-release party venue and other relaxed vibrating wisdom.
The Vibrating Beds gig next at The Pyramid on Sat., Feb. 18 with SubCity and the Readymix crew at what is billed as SubCity’s "second-last show." Visit Pyramid7.com for more information.
"The theme of the night is to send off SubCity. There will be lots of dancing. We want to encourage people to freak out. We like to get them dancing. Sometimes we’ll dip into old soul. Etta James. We’re into ’60s girl-group stuff. Phil Spector stuff. We’re going to play all six songs from the two singles.
"We’ve gotten to the point where our set is 90% original."
They may even play some faves by The Sonics or Little Richard — so yell ’em out so they can yell ’em back atcha!
"After that we’re going on a tour. We’ll play Regina, Calgary and Edmonton. Then, in April, we’re getting ready for the Transistor 66 Weekender," Filteau says.
