CD Reviews
This self-titled debut album from grungy, Toronto three-piece band RatTail is adventurous yet listenable, thanks mostly to singer Jasmyn Burke’s alternately nasal and scratchy voice. It’s her distinctive vocals that carry the album on their indefinable quality and definite charisma. Basic Buildings is the kind of indie rock that achieves the perfect balance of fresh rock 'n’ roll with catchy and conventional song structures. Gasmask opens with whoops and calls, and ends with distorted barking over fading guitars. Go Green features a lengthy spell of that lip farting thing right in the middle before Burke's voice soars. The record is catchy and pop-sensible with enough grunge and attitude to remain badass and indie. With high energy, murky songs, RatTail is probably a safe bet for a band to watch in 2012.
